Spch 1113 Introduction to Speech Communication

Persuasive Speech

Black Graphic

For your fourth (and final) speech, you will be required to argue a particular point of view using evidence, facts, or examples to support your opinion. Additionally, you must use two different types of visuals to enhance your delivery. This is not just an informative speech--convince us!!!

Visual aids may include PowerPoint slides, video tapes, charts, graphs, handouts, overheads, and movies among other things, and you must use a minimum of two and a maximum of three. Your goal is to use audio and visual supplements to enhance your speech, so part of your grade will include how effectively you use your speech aids. (Playing a videotape for ten minutes or having something just sit on the lectern for no apparent reason is not an effective use of visual aids.)

As usual, keep in mind all the speech elements we have studied. Remember that appropriate dress is even more important during a persuasive speech.

  • Length: 8-10 minutes (you will lose 1 point [of 100] for every 15 seconds your speech is short).
  • Requirements:
    • two different visuals
    • outline (copy to me prior to speaking)
    • appropriate dress, preparation, research, delivery
  • Purpose: to debate your topic and to take a stand on one side of the issue
  • Value: 200 points
