Communication Apprehension Checklist

The following 14 statements concern feelings about communicating with other people. Please indicate the degree to which each statement applies to you by circling your response. Circle YES if you strongly agree, yes if you agree, ? If you don't know, no if you disagree and NO if you strongly disagree. There are no right or wrong answers. Work quickly; record your first impressions and do not think about each answer extensively.

Scoring: YES = 1 yes =2  ? = 3  no = 4 NO = 5


(1) Add the scores for the following items: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 12.

(2) Add the scores for the following items: 1, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13, and 14.

(3) Add 42 to the total for Step 1.

(4) Subtract the total of Step 2 from the total of Step 3. Your score should be between 14 and 70.

The normal range is between 28 and 47. Students scoring above 47 are probably highly communication apprehensive. Students scoring below 28 are very low in communication apprehension.
