Spch 1113 Introduction to Speech Communication

Demonstration Speech

Black Graphic

For your third speech, you will demonstrate how to do something for your audience, and you will be informing them, teaching them, entertaining them, and (most of all) involving them. Your primary goals for this speech are to involve your audience by appealing to their senses, to be at ease in front of your audience, and to put your audience at ease. To accomplish that, all or at least some of your audience members must be actively involved in your speech.

Continue to remember the various keys to effective speaking which we have discussed up to this point, and sharpen your skills in using all the verbal and non-verbal cues to keep your audience interested. You need to be comfortable in your space for this speech, so you will not use the lectern.

  • Length: 8-10 minutes (you will lose 1 point [of 100] for every 15 seconds your speech is short).
  • Requirements:
    • You are to show--physically--how to do something; you must bring all the needed props/materials/supplies to show how to do whatever your topic is. Do not merely tell how it is done or explain what it is--show us how it's done step by step
    • Outline to me prior to speaking; note cards to me after your speech.

  • Purpose: To teach, inform, entertain, involve

  • Value: 175 points
