Engl 1033 Technical Writing I Definition Memo

Situation:

Assume that you are employed as a technical supervisor and are acting as a resource person in your particular area to a new manager not familiar with your specialty. This new manager has decided to reduce your dealership’s parts inventory to cut cost. He believes that the dealership will save money if parts are ordered from manufacturers as needed and do not take up shelf space. Your job is to change his mind. You must explain the operation of some replacement part and convince the manager that it is important for continued customer satisfaction to keep that specific part stocked in the company warehouse at all times.

Task:

Write a three-paragraph memo to Ray Deator, the new general manager. Develop an introduction that discusses

  • why you are writing (refer to some specific occurrence) and
  • what you are writing about (i.e. the need to keep some part in stock)

In your discussion, provide an expanded formal definition of the equipment in question. Include this information:

  • term (=name), type (=what larger group is it part of?), and distinguishing characteristics (=What is it used for? What does it do?)
  • What are its parts or components?
  • How is it used?

Your conclusion must provide a reason why your company has to keep its equipment running at all times and why it is urgent that a decision on stocking the part be made quickly (usually because more parts must be ordered by a specific date).

Due Date: TBA
