Consumer Product Paper

Length:

at least 500 words typed, double-spaced

Due date:

at the beginning of the last class meeting of Week 5

For this assignment, please find an example of an American Indian image or name used on an everyday consumer product. Bring this item (or an image of it) to class with you and describe it briefly to the class (i.e. tell us what it looks like). Afterwards, write a paper discussing the origin of and your reaction to this image or name. Your research and presentation must address all of the following questions:

  • What is the product? Describe the product and the image or the name in detail.

  • Had you ever noticed the name or the image before? Why or why not?

  • What was your initial reaction to this product when you found it?

  • Did the name or image attract you to the product?

  • What is the history of the name or the image used on this product? What does it mean?                Why was it chosen?

  • In your opinion, what does the name or the image have to do with the product?

  • Do you think the image is stereotypical or offensive? Why or why not?

  • Now that you have thought about the issue of stereotypes, would you buy this product again? Do you think the image should be changed or removed? Why or why not?

Do not answer these questions separately. Instead, write (type) an integrated paper with several well-developed and coherent paragraphs that use standard grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Instead of using a cover sheet, please provide the following information in the top left-hand corner of the first page in this order (double-spaced):
