MLA In-Text Citation Exercises

Read the essay "Part-Time Employment Undermines Students' Commitment to School" by Laurence Steinberg on pp. 554-557 in McWhorter and complete the following citation exercises as if you were citing Steinberg's essay in a research paper. Use the proper parenthetical MLA in-text citation method as discussed in class and as demonstrated in McWhorter on pp. 719-723 and 748-752. For each exercise, indicate which paragraph you were using (type "Paragraph 3" or whichever number applies above each answer) so that I may check your work more easily.

  • Write three sentences that paraphrase one of the paragraphs. Cite correctly.

  • Write another three sentences that paraphrase a different paragraph, but this time use an introductory tag identifying the author and the title of the essay. Cite correctly.

  • Write a sentence that contains a quoted phrase of five (5) words or fewer. Cite correctly.

  • Write a least three sentences that require indenting a quotation of four lines or more. Use an introductory tag. Cite correctly.

  • Paraphrase a sentence from Chapter 20 in Reinking. Cite correctly.

  • Bonus:
An article appearing in the Sunday, July 23, 2000, edition of Coolcomp Weekly was written by Fred Friendly and is titled "Why Comp II Is so Awesome." The article is printed on the second page of Section C. You have taken a quote from this article and have not identified the author in the introductory tag. In addition, you are using another two articles by this same author for your research. Give the proper in-text citation for your quote.
