Memo

DATE:             June 7, 2005

TO:                 Technical Writing I Students

FROM:           Carsten Schmidtke, Instructor

SUBJECT:      How to Complete Your Technical Writing Portfolio

INTRODUCTION

Your Technical Writing Portfolio is a major documentation component of your Technical Writing coursework. You had been asked to keep all of your individual assignments that were graded and returned to you. The assembly of this collection will be one of the final assignments for this course.

Your Technical Writing Portfolio has three purposes:

  1. to reinforce the concept of revision;
  2. to help you analyze various audiences;
  3. to help you identify various technical writing formats and their purposes.

COLLECTION GUIDELINES

Please arrange your assignments in the order listed below with the first item listed first in the portfolio and the last item listed last. You are responsible for assembling your work into a soft binder with metal prongs and for placing a clearly marked section tab divider between the sections of your portfolio (examples will be provided). The items to be included in your portfolio are these:

  • Adjustment Letter (graded letter with all draft copies)
  • Adjustment Refusal Letter (graded letter with all draft copies)
  • Technical Definition Memo (graded memo with all draft copies)
  • Technical Description Memo (graded memo with all draft copies)

If your final grade for any document was below 90, you are required to revise such documents one more time for the portfolio. If your grade was above 90, you are encouraged to revise but do not have to do so.

Design a professional cover sheet for the entire collection. Your cover sheet must contain your name, the course name (Technical Writing I), the course number (Engl 1033), your instructor’s name (spelled correctly), the semester in which you took the course, and the word “Portfolio.” The final design and order of these elements are your choice.

CONCLUSION
