Community Assistant
The Community Assistant is responsible for assisting the Residence Coordinators in developing, coordinating, and maintaining a program within the hall which strives to provide a positive intellectual, emotional, and social living environment for students. A Community Assistant is someone with at least one semester's residence in a residence hall at OSU-Okmulgee. The Community Assistant is selected on the basis of a display of, sensitivity to, and interest in people; objectivity and respect for the worth and dignity of the individual; open mindedness on issues; degree of empathy; the ability to handle autonomy and make decisions; and his/her success within the academic community. A Community Assistant is, always, a role model.
The main responsibility of the Community Assistant is to provide support, encouragement and leadership to his/her community. He/She should be available to his/her residents and empower them to grow and develop as good citizens. Community Assistants help to establish a positive living/learning environment. This is accomplished by the following:
- Being aware of the academic needs of the community
- Facilitating an environment in which residents can meet their academic needs
- Building relationships with the residents
- Assisting the residents in developing relationships with each other
- Serving as a resource
- Advising students on your halls
- Interpreting and enforcing University policies
- Role modeling positive behaviors and attitudes
- Promoting student involvement in the University
- Challenging residents to look at the world through a different perspective
- Providing helping skills to those residents in need
- Allowing residents to make their own choices, while being available to discuss those choices with them
Community Assistants also perform the following administrative tasks:
- Check-in and check-out procedures of residents
- Responsible for helping with all close downs and openings
- Working on-call weekends
- Keeping track of occupancy in his/her community
- Documenting conduct violations and filing incident reports
- Reporting maintenance and facility concerns
- Reviewing the physical appearance of the building
- Panning and Initiating programs that facilitate four areas Cultural, Educational, Social, and Recreational
- Serve as RHA Representative
- Duty responsibilities as assigned
Community Assistants must be full-time students with a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0 or higher. Community Assistants are also required to live on the floor for which he/she is responsible.
Along with the hourly wage each Community Assistant is paid, there will be a $600 stipend per semester that will be paid in three (3) $200 installments; this stipend is for the following on-call weekends, check-in, check-out, close down, reopening, and programming.
